I’m a mom of three who loves books, freshly made baked goods, intriguing science projects, and lately… combat sports. I started my jiu jitsu journey after enrolling my kids in classes with Professor Joshua in the spring of 2024. They were 5, 6, and 10 at the time, and I was blown away by how effective the techniques were. Even my youngest — maybe 35 pounds at the time — could successfully use what she learned against an adult. The idea that a smaller person with better technique could beat a larger opponent fascinated me. Jiu jitsu is one of the few arts where leverage truly beats brute force.

After a few months of watching from the sidelines, I signed up for both Muay Thai and jiu jitsu. I love how tiny nuances and small adjustments can completely change the outcome. After almost two years of training, I’m stronger, more flexible, more balanced, and honestly just happier because I train.

I’ve seen firsthand how jiu jitsu has improved our lives on and off the mat. For me, it’s a fun, engaging way to maintain strength and mobility as I get older. For my kids, it’s helped them develop focus, problem solving skills, and the ability to stay calm under pressure. They’ve also learned how to physically defend themselves — and it’s empowering for them to know they have control over their personal space.

Jiu jitsu has been transformative for our family, and I feel fortunate that through coaching, I get to share its benefits with others in an atmosphere that is safe, encouraging, instructive and fun.
